Stretching from Deer Lake to Corner Brook, the Humber Valley is located at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Moving further west, you’ll discover the Bay of Islands, which opens onto the Gulf of St Lawrence. This particular area of Western Newfoundland and Labrador offers stunning scenery throughout the year. During the different seasons of the year, you’ll see the hills either covered with snow or mist.

In fall, you can see these hills glowing with shades of orange and red. The beauty of all these places near Corner Brook can be enjoyed by taking a day trip. As a part of this trip, you can explore these four exciting hiking spots:

1. Steady Brook Falls

If you’re looking for a quick trek with some great rewards, this would be a good one. This trail to the lookout over Steady Brook Falls begins at the base of Marble Mountain. You can find a place to park your vehicle just behind George’s Ski World. From there, you can begin your trek. You’ll be heading up through the forest after taking the mountain access road.

The sounds of the falls can be heard in the distance. When you reach the top of the trail, you’ll come across a viewing platform. It provides you the most spectacular views of the falls. This is truly rewarding after trekking for quite some time.

2. Man in the Mountain

This is another name for the Humber Valley Trail. Before beginning this uphill climb, you can stop for some time at the rest area. Upon looking towards the mountain from this spot, you can actually see the fabled Man in the Mountain. You can then head along Route 440, also called the Riverside Drive. Turning right, cross the Humber River.

An immediate right turn after the bridge would take you to a parking area. For the first section of this trail, you’ll be ascending nearly 1,000 feet above sea level. As you’re trekking through the dense forest, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to catch your breath. While you’re doing so, you can take in the majestic views of the valley below.

3. Corner Brook Steam Trail

This place is located in the heart of Corner Brook. You’ll have several places to take a leisurely stroll while exploring the Corner Brook Stream Trail. This trail travels uphill from Margaret Bowater Park and then downwards into the Corner Brook Stream Gorge. Here, you’ll get to enjoy breathtaking views of the Corner Brook area. You’ll end up on a bridge that would take you across the gorge to Massey Drive’s base.

4. Copper Mine Falls and Cape Blow Me Down trails

While travelling around the Bay of Islands, don’t forget to take the Copper Mile Falls trail. It is located near York Harbor along Route 450. At the end of the trail, you’ll be treated to the magnificent Copper Mine Falls. There’s also a small pool, where you can take a dip and cool off. If you’re looking for more challenges, take the Cape Blow Me Down trail. You’ll be ascending 650 meters through the lush green forest. Then, you’ll be out into the wide-open terrain. From here, you can enjoy marvellous views over the outer Bay of Islands.

The national parks of Canada have been established as protected areas for preserving the nation’s wildlife and cultural heritage. All of them are administered by a government agency called ‘Parks Canada’. The country was divided into several natural regions in accordance with the National Parks System Plan.

Today, the country has more than 45 national parks and national park reserves. Covering over 340,000 square kilometers, these parks constitute more than 3% of the landmass of Canada. There are four national parks you can explore during your stay in Corner Brook:

1. Gros Morne National Park

Located on Newfoundland’s west coast, this national park has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is spread over a vast area of over 1,800 square kilometers. Gros Morne National Park is Atlantic Canada’s second largest national park.

It has been named after the second-highest mountain peak in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The park is a part of the Long Range Mountains. It was elevated to the status of a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1897.

Wildlife in this part of the country includes black bears, red foxes, snowshoe hares, and Arctic foxes. You can also find marked trails that can be used for hiking as a part of your day trips. These trails would lead you to the coastal and interior areas of Gros Morne National Park.

2. Terra Nova National Park

This national park is located on Newfoundland’s eastern coast. Terra Nova was the original Portuguese name given to this region. It is also the Latin name for Newfoundland. Established in the mid-20th century, this was the first national park in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

It offers protection to the Eastern Island Boreal Forest natural region, which covers most of the island of Newfoundland. The Terra Nova National Park is covered with areas of white pine, black spruce, maple, and other deciduous trees.

Wildlife in this park includes coyotes, caribou, black bears, beavers, red foxes, and pine martens. You can enjoy some exciting activities like kayaking, camping, and mountain biking in this national park.

Black Bear

3. Torngat Mountains National Park

The name of this national park is derived from the Inuktitut word ‘Tongait’, which means ‘place of spirits’. Inuktitut is among the country’s aboriginal languages. Torngat Mountains National Park is set in the Torngat Mountains located on the Labrador Peninsula.

It covers more than 9,000 square kilometers of mountainous terrain falling between Labrador Sea and Northern Quebec. The park was officially established on the 10th of July 2008 under the Nunavik Inuit Land Claims Agreement.

It extends from Cape Chidley south to Saglek Fjord. Torngat Mountains National Park also offers protection to many species of wild animals including polar bear and golden eagle. Among the activities you can enjoy while exploring this area are scrambling, hiking, and kayaking.

4. Mealy Mountains National Park Reserve

This national park reserve is located in Newfoundland and Labrador province’s Labrador region. It covers a large area of nearly 10,700 square kilometres and is eastern Canada’s largest national park. This national park reserve was established in 2015.

It offers protection to vast areas of boreal forest and tundra. It also protects over 50 kilometres of the Labrador Sea and Lake Melville’s shoreline. The park is home to healthy populations of endangered species, such as Wild Arctic Salmon and Mealy Mountains Woodland Caribou.

The images of all those enchanting natural surroundings of Corner Brook would surely tempt you to visit the city. It is located at the mouth of the Humber River on the scenic Bay of Islands. What’s more important than visiting the city is to plan a trip to all the beautiful places nearby. Before you book your trip to this Canadian city, you need to know certain things.

Book well in advance

Just like you, there can be many individuals wanting to visit this part of Canada. Besides leisure travelers, many business executives also arrive in this city during peak travel seasons. So, the clichéd advice to book your trip well in advance cannot be ignored. You must have everything booked well in advance, such as flight tickets, hotel accommodation, and car rental.

Remember the name St. John’s

Yet another important thing to keep in mind is that St. John’s is different from Saint John. This can be very confusing, because both of these cities are located in Canada. The city of Saint John is located on the Bay of Fundy in the New Brunswick province.

St. John’s is the capital city of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. If you’re planning a tour of this city during your time in Corner Brook, remember its name correctly. Make sure you’re booking your car rental or accommodation for St. John’s.

About the province that houses Corner Brook

Corner Brook is located in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It is bigger than you might be thinking right now. The province is spread over a vast area of more than 400,000 square kilometers.

It is only a bit smaller than the American state of California and a little bigger than Japan. Newfoundland and Labrador is nearly twice the size of United Kingdom. The sheer size of this province also presents great opportunities for you to explore several places:

St. John’s: The capital of the province, this city is on the Avalon Peninsula’s eastern tip. It was incorporated in the late 19th century as a city. The closeness of St. John’s to the ocean and its role as a provincial capital has shaped its economy.

Most of the residents of this city are employed in the public sector. In recent times, the name of St. John’s has been included in the list of 19 World Energy Cities.

Conception Bay South: The second biggest municipality of the province, Conception Bay South is home to a little over 26,000 residents. It is located on the Conception Bay’s southern shores. The fertile land and the abundance of natural resources in this area had attracted the English and Irish settlers. Later, it was developed into a town in 1973 by amalgamating nine small communities.

3. Paradise: This town has a population of 21,389 and is a part of the St. John’s Metropolitan Area. Paradise is located on the Avalon Peninsula and was settled during the 19th century. Today, it ranks as one of the most populous municipalities in the province.

4. Mount Pearl: Founded in the early 19th century, Mount Pearl was incorporated as a town in the mid-20th century. Later, it got incorporated in 1988 as a city. It is located on the Avalon Peninsula’s eastern tip. Today, it is the second biggest city in the province and its third most populous municipality.

Corner Brook is certainly one of the many hidden gems of Canada, which not many tourists explore. You can find many opportunities in this part of the world to indulge in some exciting activities. Corner Brook never disappoints those who like to get outdoors and have fun. Here, we’ve put together some fabulous things you can do while exploring this Canadian city.

1. Hike on the Three Bear Mountain trail

A part of the Corner Brook Stream trail network, it offers amazing panoramic views. It begins at the O’Connell Center on Hospital Hill and has been maintained well. You can enjoy marvelous views of the city and the Bay of Islands while hiking on this trail.

It has stairs over all of the key elevations and features benches and signs on the way. Some captivating views of the downtown area and west side can be savored from the first look-off point. You’ll also come across a stone arch, which shows the history of the city.

Upon continuing on the trail, you’ll reach a point that overlooks the Bay of Islands and Blomidon Mountains. The trail then circles back to the O’Connell Center. Although this is a short trail, it offers some of the best views of Corner Brook and its surroundings.

2. Try some local beer

bootleg-brew-co

In recent times, Bootleg Brew Co. has started its taproom in Corner Brook’s downtown. Some amazingly unique beers are served here, which will leave you impressed. Newfoundland had a major role to play in prohibiting bootlegging. This prompted the brewery in giving its business this name, which sounds local and is quite original.

Bootleg Brew Co. was started by two cooks-turned-brewers hailing from Newfoundland. As their story goes, they came in contact with each other while working at Newfound Sushi as cooks. Soon, they realized that they were both passionate about beer. So, the duo Matt Tilley and Morgan Turner-Crocker decided to start brewing at home.

They enjoyed their hobby so much that they began producing more beer than expected. Soon, they were sharing the drinks with their family and friends. They started off small and then went on to create this brewery. It stands out for its styles and flavors of beer. You’ll find their taproom inviting with local art on the walls and indoor games. As they offer different flavors of beers, you’ll have fun tasting some of them.

3. Feel the thrill of zip lining at Steady Brook Falls

Some of the local operators provide adventurous zip line experiences. The adventure begins at the top of Steady Brook Falls, which is located just outside of Corner Brook. You’ll feel the adrenaline rush as you go zip lining at the speed of 30 kilometers an hour. During this glide, you’ll be at a height of over 280 feet. You’ll also get to enjoy some gorgeous views of Humber Valley.

Throughout the course, you’ll get to stop at the decks to savour the breathtaking sceneries. This activity would be conducted in an environment-friendly setting. It can be enjoyed by the kids as well as adults. Generally, it takes about two hours for any individual to complete the entire zip line course.

Located on Newfoundland Island’s west coast is the city of Corner Brook. You’ll be delighted to witness some mesmerizing sights while getting around in this part of the world. In the 18th century, Corner Brook was just a small settlement of fishermen.

Today, it has become one of the most developed cities on Canada’s east coast. For some, it is a city of great visual appeal. Others see it as a paradise for adventure lovers. Whatever your plans are during your time in the city, it will surely give you some memorable experiences.

Bay of Islands

On the west coast of the island of Newfoundland is situated an extensive inlet called the Bay of Islands. The largest island in the Bay of Islands is called Woods Island and was formerly inhabited. The bay is surrounded by Long Range Mountains in most directions and comprises many inlets. One of the major rivers that flow into the Bay of Islands is the Humber River.

It was used to send logs down to the bay for many years. These logs were turned into paper products by Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Ltd. You can indulge in many recreational activities while exploring this river.

Corner Brook Stream Trail

This network of majestic walking trails will give you some truly wonderful moments. These trails were a result of an idea that emerged during the 1980s with a feasibility study. It was done by the local authorities. The idea was to create simple walking trails.

Over these years, the network of trails has grown significantly and has an overall infrastructure of $2,500,000. The infrastructural developments include viewing decks, bridges, walkways, and rest areas. Winding through the city, these trails also extend to the upper reaches of the Corner Brook Stream corridor.

They are used for a variety of purposes throughout the year, ranging from leisure activities to organized sporting events. The enchanting sights and a relaxing atmosphere provides residents of Corner Brook a welcome break from their routines. Most of the land is owned by the Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Ltd.

The Blomidon Mountains

These mountains were formed as a result of a collision with Europe about 500 million years back. You can go hiking on these mountains to watch the fantastic sea vistas and the resident reindeer population. However, you’ll need some topographical maps and a compass as some of the trails are not marked well.

Blomidon

Blow Me Down Provincial Park

Savor the magnificent views of Blow Me Down mountains and the Bay of Islands while exploring this beautiful park. Within the Blow Me Down Provincial Park, there are many opportunities for hiking. The families visiting this park can enjoy walking on a half-kilometer trail.

The boardwalk and steps combine to make this trail extremely pleasant to take for visitors. You can get to an observation tower by taking one of the two trails. After walking for about 30 minutes, you’ll reach the top of the tower. You’ll be rewarded with some awe-inspiring views from the top.

One can imagine the delight of the captains who surveyed the Bay of Islands from the spot. You’re advised to wear comfortable shoes and clothing appropriate for the season during your trip. Governor’s Staircase is a unique walk you must not miss during this trip.
